"Be careful to add virtue to your faith; to virtue, knowledge"
--2 Peter 1:5&6

If you want to enjoy the fullest measure of grace and the assurance of faith that comes with it, then under the blessed Spirit's influence and assistance do what the Scripture tells you. First of all, learn to "Be careful." Take care that your faith is of the right kind-- not a mere belief in doctrine but a simple faith depending on Christ and on Christ alone.

Then, study the Scriptures well, and increase your knowledge of God. Knowledge has a way of confirming faith. Try to understand God's Word; let it live in your heart richly.

When you have done this, then "add to your knowledge self-control." Be careful for your body and our soul which controls it from within.

And then, by God’s Holy Spirit, seek patience. Ask Him to help you endure the heat of affliction. Adorn yourself with the beauty of patience, and don’t murmur or be depressed in your troubles.

With patience, then, become godly. Godliness is something more than religion. Make God's glory your object in life; live in His sight; dwell close to Him; seek for fellowship with Him; and you will have "godliness."

After that seek to love all the saints as brothers. And beyond that, develop the love that opens its arms to all men and loves their souls.

When you are adorned with these jewels you will gain assurance of your "calling and election." Be careful!  And remember that luke-warmness and doubting very naturally go hand in hand. [M&E]
