Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– December 5

by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff

“Ask, and it will be given to you…“

—Matthew 7:7

There is a place in England where a serving of bread is given to every passerby who chooses to ask for it. Whoever the traveler may be, he only has to knock at the door of St. Cross Hospital and there is the serving of bread for him.

Jesus Christ loves sinners so much that He has built a St. Cross Hospital of His own so that whenever a sinner is hungry he only has to knock and have his needs supplied. Indeed, Christ has done better! He also provides the sinner with a bath where he can be washed. The fountain is always full and effective. No sinner ever went into it and found that it couldn’t wash away his stains.

And, as if this were not enough, Christ’s hospital also supplies the traveler with a new wardrobe, clothing him from head to foot. And, if he wishes to be a soldier, he can be fully equipped for the battle. In fact, nothing that is good for him will be withheld. He’ll receive spending-money for as long as he lives, and he’ll inherit everlasting treasure when he enters into the joy of his Lord.

If all these things are to be had by merely knocking at mercy’s door, then knock hard today, and ask large things of your generous Lord. Don’t leave the throne of grace until all of your needs have been spread before Him, and until by faith you have been assured that they will be supplied. No bashfulness should keep us away when Jesus invites. No unbelief should hinder when Jesus promises. No cold-heartedness should restrain when such blessings are to be obtained. [M&E]
