Morning & Evening Daily Devotional Reading– November 16

by Charles H. Spurgeon, Revised and Edited by William C. Neff

“The Lord is my portion.”

–Lamentations 3:24

Notice that Jeremiah doesn’t say, “The Lord is partly my portion,” nor “The Lord is in my portion.” No. The Lord Himself makes up the sum total of our inheritance. He is all that we possess or desire. We must remember that we don’t merely have His grace, or His love, nor His covenant, but Jehovah Himself. He has chosen us for His portion, and we have chosen Him for ours.

The Lord is our all-sufficient portion. God fills Himself; and if God is all-sufficient in Himself, He must be all-sufficient for us. It is not easy to satisfy man’s desires. When he dreams that he is satisfied, he suddenly wakes to the perception that there is something more to be desired. But all that we can wish for is to be found in Him so that we ask, “Whom do I have in Heaven, but You, O Lord? There is nothing upon earth that I desire beside You.”

It is right for us to “delight ourselves in the Lord” for He allows us to drink from the river of His good pleasure. Our faith stretches her wings and mounts like an eagle into the heaven of divine love. We have a very good heritage.

Let’s rejoice in the Lord always; let’s show to the world that we are a happy and a blessed people, and provoke them to say, “We will go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.” [M&E]
